Ayutthaya was Thailand's capital for four centuries before it was sacked in 1767, and the ruins of its temples still stand in a UNESCO-listed park. You can cycle between them in a day — the Buddha head wrapped in tree roots at Wat Mahathat is the image most people leave with. It's just over an hour from Bangkok by train, so many Muslim visitors come for the day and eat back in the city, where halal options are plentiful.
