Cosmetic Surgery in Thailand 2026: Real Costs, Safety Checks and Recovery
Cosmetic surgery is the treatment people research the longest and ask about the least. It is expensive at home, it is rarely covered by insurance, and almost nobody wants to discuss it with a receptionist they might run into again. That combination is exactly why Thailand became one of the largest cosmetic surgery destinations in the world: the price is a third of what it is in most Western capitals, the surgeons operate at high volume, and you can recover somewhere nobody knows you.
It is also the branch of medical travel where the gap between the best and the worst is widest. A rhinoplasty at a private hospital in Bangkok is done by a surgeon holding a Thai board certification in plastic surgery, in a licensed operating theatre, with an anaesthetist and an overnight bed. A rhinoplasty at a shopfront clinic forty minutes away might be done by a doctor with no surgical specialty at all, under local anaesthetic, and you would not be able to tell the difference from the website. Both are legal. The price difference is often only a few hundred dollars.
This guide gives you the 2026 prices from published Thai hospital price lists, the same figures for the United States and the UK so the comparison is real, the tier we recommend and the tiers we do not, how many days you actually need, what you can and cannot do while you heal, and the checks that separate a surgeon you can trust from a website that photographs well.
Why Thailand Ended Up With This Industry
Cosmetic surgery travel did not happen here by accident, and it is worth understanding why, because the same reasons tell you where the risks sit.
💵 The saving is large in absolute terms
On a facelift or a body case the difference is five figures, which is a different conversation from saving a few hundred on a filling. That is why cosmetic surgery, more than any other treatment, is worth flying for even once you count the trip.
🔁 Volume makes surgeons fast
Repetition matters more in aesthetic surgery than in almost any other field. A surgeon who does eight noses a week has seen versions of your nose that a surgeon doing eight a year has not. This is the real argument for coming here, and it is a better one than price.
🕊️ Privacy is built into the trip
A large share of patients say privately that this is the deciding factor rather than money. Swelling from facial surgery peaks around day three and is largely gone by the time you land back home two weeks later.

The same industry that produced excellent hospitals also produced a long tail of clinics selling surgery on price alone. Everything else in this guide exists to help you tell them apart, because from the outside they look identical.
What Cosmetic Surgery Costs in Thailand in 2026
The numbers below are converted from the published 2026 price lists of two specific tiers in Bangkok: dedicated cosmetic hospitals holding international accreditation, and the plastic surgery departments of full private hospitals. They are premium prices deliberately, because those are the two tiers we would put a patient in. Bangkok has clinics charging half of this, and later in the guide we explain plainly why we do not send anyone to them for surgery. Converted at roughly 33 baht to the dollar.

A dash means that tier does not publish a price for that procedure, not that it cannot be done. The two columns are not competing versions of the same operation either: the private hospital package prices include the theatre, the anaesthetist, the surgeon team and the inpatient room in one number, while the cosmetic hospital list prices the operation and states the nights separately. Read them as two different products at two different price points, both of which we would be comfortable sending someone to.
The same work at home
This is the comparison that decides whether the trip makes sense, and it is the one most articles get wrong by quoting a headline US figure that does not include the theatre or the anaesthetist.

- The US column is the surgeon fee only. It is the national average published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and it excludes the operating theatre, the anaesthetist, implants, tests and garments. In practice the real US total is commonly 1.5 to 2 times the figure shown, which means the gap against Thailand is wider than this table makes it look.
- The Thai and UK columns are both closer to all-inclusive, so those two compare directly.
- Ranges are ranges. Rhinoplasty spans from a fifteen-minute implant to a three-hour rebuild with rib cartilage, and calling both "a nose job" is how people end up shocked by a quote.
- Nobody can price your surgery from a photograph. Photographs from three angles get you an estimate. The quotation comes after a consultation, and for anything structural, after imaging.
- Combining procedures is cheaper than doing them separately, because you pay for one theatre session and one anaesthetic. It is also a bigger operation with a longer recovery and a higher complication rate, so it is a medical decision before it is a financial one.
The four items that most often appear after the fact are the anaesthetist, the compression garment, the follow-up visits, and the medication you go home with. On implant surgery, ask specifically whether the implant is inside the quoted price and which brand it is. A quotation that lists every line is worth more than a lower one that does not.
The Four Kinds of Place You Can Walk Into
Every clinic in Bangkok photographs like a five-star hotel. What separates them is what happens in the ten minutes after something goes wrong, and that is decided by the tier you chose long before you got there.

Some are staffed by competent doctors. The problem is structural rather than personal: no inpatient bed, no anaesthetist on site, no way for you to check the surgeon's specialty, and no meaningful recourse once you have flown home. Cheaper surgery exists in Bangkok, it is easy to find, and it is not what we would book for ourselves or for anyone who asks us.
Thailand licenses doctors, and holding a medical licence is not the same as holding the plastic surgery board qualification. A general practitioner can legally offer many aesthetic procedures. The single most useful check in this whole guide is verifying that your surgeon is a full member of the Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Thailand, which requires the protected specialist title and six to twelve years of postgraduate training. Their site carries a searchable member directory, and if a name is not in it you can email the secretariat and ask.
The Procedures, Explained Plainly
What each operation involves, how long you are out of action, and the part people usually misunderstand before they book.
Rhinoplasty
The most requested operation in Thailand and the one with the widest price spread, because "rhinoplasty" covers four different operations. A silicone implant to raise the bridge takes under an hour and is the cheap end. Tip work using your own ear cartilage costs more and looks more natural. A full open rhinoplasty that reduces and reshapes the bone is real surgery. A revision using rib cartilage is the top of the market. Breast augmentation
Implants placed under the breast or the muscle through an incision in the fold, the areola or the armpit. The choice of implant drives a large part of the price: standard round implants sit at the bottom of the range and premium ergonomic gel implants can more than double it. One night in hospital, a week before you feel normal, four to six weeks before the gym. Ask which brand, which profile, which volume, and whether the implant carries a manufacturer warranty you can claim on from your own country. 3,790 to 9,240 USD
Breast lift and reduction
A lift repositions the tissue you already have; a reduction removes some of it. Both trade a scar for a shape, and how much scar depends on how much lifting is needed: a small lift can be done around the areola alone, a large one needs the anchor-shaped scar under the breast. Surgeons who tell you there will be no visible scar are describing a different operation from the one you need. Often combined with implants in one session. 2,510 to 4,120 USD
Liposuction and VASER
Fat removed through small cannulas. Traditional tumescent liposuction is the cheapest option and works well on soft fat. VASER uses ultrasound to loosen the fat first, which gives a smoother result on fibrous areas and on men, and costs more. Neither is a weight loss operation: the honest description is body contouring for someone already close to their target weight. You wear a compression garment for four to six weeks and the real result appears at three months. 1,670 to 5,240 USD per area
Tummy tuck
Loose skin removed and the abdominal muscles stitched back together, usually after pregnancy or major weight loss. The single biggest recovery on this list: three nights in hospital, drains for several days, two weeks bent slightly forward, six weeks before you lift anything. It also carries the highest clot risk of any common cosmetic operation, which is why the flying advice later in this guide matters most here. 3,820 USD
Buttock lift and implants
Two different operations. A lift removes skin and tightens; implants add volume with a solid device placed in or under the muscle. Fat transfer, the third option, has the worst safety record in aesthetic surgery when performed badly, and any surgeon offering it should be able to tell you exactly which plane they inject into and why. Male breast reduction
Gynecomastia surgery removes glandular tissue and the fat around it, usually combining a small excision through the areola with VASER liposuction of the chest. One of the most reliably satisfying operations on this list because the change is immediate and the scar is tiny. One night, compression vest for a month, back to a desk in under a week. 3,210 USD
Facelift and neck lift
The deep tissue layer is lifted and repositioned, and the excess skin is trimmed. A modern facelift is a tissue operation rather than a skin-pulling one, which is why the results no longer look stretched. The neck is usually done at the same time because a lifted face above an untouched neck is the classic giveaway. Eyelid surgery
Excess skin removed from the upper lid, or fat repositioned in the lower lid. The best value operation in aesthetic surgery: it is quick, done under local anaesthetic as a day case, has a short recovery and changes how tired you look more than anything else per dollar spent. Facial contouring
Chin implants, sliding genioplasty where the bone itself is moved forward, jaw angle reduction, cheek implants and buccal fat removal. Thailand and Korea are the two centres of this work. The important warning is that buccal fat removal is permanent and the face continues to lose volume with age, so a hollow look that suits you at thirty may not at fifty. Bone work needs two nights and a soft diet for weeks. 1,230 to 4,550 USD
Arm and thigh lift
Skin removal after significant weight loss, leaving a long scar down the inner arm or inner thigh. Nobody has this operation for fun and nobody should be sold it casually: the trade is real skin removal for a permanent visible scar, and a surgeon who does not spend most of the consultation on the scar is not preparing you properly. Combination surgery
The so-called mommy makeover, usually a tummy tuck with breast surgery, sometimes with liposuction. Financially it is the best value on the page because you pay for one anaesthetic and one hospital stay. Medically it is the highest risk item here, because operating time and clot risk both rise sharply. Reputable surgeons cap total theatre time, commonly around six hours, and a surgeon willing to do everything in one very long session is telling you something. Quoted per case
The Non-Surgical Route, and When It Is the Better Answer
A meaningful share of people who research surgery want something that does not require an operating theatre. Injectables and energy devices cost a fraction of surgery here, need no recovery, and for anyone under about forty they often deliver most of what was actually wanted. Prices below are 2026 published rates at a Bangkok hospital aesthetic department.

Botulinum toxin lasts three to four months. Flying to Bangkok twice a year to save 300 dollars a time is not a plan. Where the trip does make sense is if you are already here for surgery, a checkup or a holiday, or if you want a course of laser or a device treatment that would cost several thousand at home. Judge injectables on the total cost of the year, not on the price of one session.
The other honest point: the gap between Thailand and the West is much smaller on non-surgical work than on surgery. Devices and branded products cost roughly the same everywhere, so what you save is mostly the clinic's margin.
How Many Days You Actually Need
The single most common planning mistake is booking a week. Cosmetic surgery is not dentistry: you cannot fly home the day after, and the reason is medical rather than cosmetic.
Before you fly, two to six weeks out
Photographs from three angles, your medical history, a list of medications and your goal in your own words. You get an outline plan and an estimate. Stop smoking now if you smoke, because nicotine constricts the small vessels that keep a flap or a scar alive, and most surgeons want four weeks clear. Stop fish oil, high-dose vitamin E and anti-inflammatories a fortnight out, on the surgeon's instruction rather than ours.
Day 1: arrival
Fly in, sleep, and do nothing else. Do not schedule the consultation for the day you land. A tired patient makes decisions they would not make rested, and jet lag makes swelling worse.
Day 2: consultation and pre-operative tests
You meet the surgeon in person, the plan is confirmed or changed, and the final price is signed. Bloods, an ECG if you are over a certain age, and a chest X-ray for general anaesthetic. This is your last easy chance to walk away, and walking away at this point costs you a consultation fee and nothing else.
Day 3: surgery
Marking, theatre, recovery, then either home to the hotel the same evening for a day case or one to three nights in hospital. Have someone with you for the first night either way. Hospitals will arrange a nurse or a companion bed if you are travelling alone, and it is worth asking before you need it.
Days 4 to 7: the worst of it
Swelling peaks around day three and starts falling from day five. Drains come out, dressings change, and you will look worse before you look better. This is normal and it is also the point where people panic, so know it is coming. Short walks every few hours, no bending, no lifting, no heat.
Days 7 to 10: stitches and the first real look
Sutures and nasal splints come out around day seven. Bruising turns yellow and fades. Most people feel human again here and start leaving the hotel for a couple of hours at a time.
Days 10 to 21: final review, then fly
A last check with the surgeon, written notes, photographs and the implant details if you have implants. Then home. Facial and eyelid surgery usually clears you at ten to fourteen days. Body surgery, and a tummy tuck above all, is often two to three weeks, and that is a clot risk decision rather than a cosmetic one.
The risk of a deep vein clot is highest between roughly day five and day fourteen after surgery, and a long-haul flight in a cramped seat during that window stacks two risks on top of each other. Abdominoplasty carries the highest clot rate of the common cosmetic operations, and it rises further when procedures are combined. Ten to fourteen days is the usual minimum, longer for body work, and it comes from your surgeon rather than from your airline.
Book a flexible return ticket. It costs a little more and it removes the one pressure that makes people fly before they should. Aisle seat, walk the cabin every hour, wear the compression stockings you were given, and drink more water than you want to.
Choosing a Surgeon, and the Warning Signs
You are buying an irreversible result from someone you have not met, in a country whose regulator you do not know. These are the checks that actually separate good from bad, in the order they matter.
- Are you a full member of the Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Thailand, and what is your registration name in their directory? A named specialist qualification is the floor, not a bonus.
- How many of my exact procedure do you do in a year? Not surgeries in general. This one.
- May I see before and after photographs of patients with my starting point, not your best case? Ask for a range, and ask to see a result at twelve months rather than at six weeks.
- Who administers the anaesthetic, and are they a qualified anaesthetist? For anything longer than an hour, the answer should be yes without hesitation.
- Which hospital do I go to if I need a bed overnight, and who admits me? A specific name.
- What is your revision policy in writing, who pays for what, and how long does it stand?
- What are the three most likely complications for me specifically, and how often do they happen in your hands?
- Will you be the person operating, from start to finish?
🚩 A price before a consultation
A firm surgical quotation issued from photographs, with no examination and no medical history, is a sales figure. It is also the number that gets revised upwards once you are in the country and committed.
🚩 No named surgeon
If the clinic will only say "our team of experienced surgeons", you cannot verify anyone. Large centres rotate surgeons, and the one whose portfolio sold you the operation may not be the one holding the scalpel.
🚩 Photographs that are too good
Different lighting, different angle, different pose and obvious retouching between the before and after. Real portfolios are shot the same way both times and include results that are good rather than miraculous.
🚩 Discounts with a deadline
Surgery promoted like a hotel booking, with a price that expires on Friday. Good surgeons have waiting lists and no reason to rush anyone into an irreversible decision.
🚩 No mention of risk
A consultation that covers only the result and never the complications is incomplete. Every operation in this guide has a real complication rate, and a surgeon who will not name yours has not consented you properly.
🚩 Agreeing with everything you ask for
The best consultations include a no. A surgeon who talks you out of one procedure, or tells you the result you have brought a photograph of is not achievable on your anatomy, is worth more than one who says yes to all of it.
Book consultations at two clinics on consecutive days before committing. It costs very little, it takes one extra day of a trip you are already making, and hearing two independent plans for the same face is the fastest way to work out which surgeon actually examined you. If the plans differ sharply, ask each of them why the other might have said what they said.
Recovering in Bangkok
You will spend far more of this trip in a hotel room than in a hospital, so where and how you recover is worth planning properly.
🏨 Where to stay
Two weeks in a standard hotel room with no kitchen and no sofa is a long two weeks. A serviced apartment with a fridge, a washing machine and somewhere to sit upright costs about the same and makes the recovery liveable. Ask the hospital for their partner rates before booking independently.
🌡️ Heat and swelling
Heat dilates blood vessels and swelling follows. Plan anything outdoors for before nine in the morning or after six in the evening, sleep propped up on two pillows for the first week, and treat the hotel air conditioning as part of the treatment plan rather than a comfort.
☀️ Sun and scars
This is the single most avoidable bad outcome of surgery in a tropical country. New scars pigment under ultraviolet light and they do not un-pigment. If your plan involves a beach, put it a long way after the surgery and take a hat, a rash vest and factor 50.
🍜 Food, pharmacies and help
Food delivery apps cover almost everything, which matters when you cannot face a lobby. Halal food is easy to find in Bangkok. Skip alcohol entirely while healing, keep the salt down for a fortnight because it holds fluid and makes swelling look worse, and get protein in even when you have no appetite.
- Loose clothing that opens at the front. Nothing that has to go over your head after facial, breast or arm surgery.
- A travel companion if you possibly can. Someone has to fetch things for a week, and the first 24 hours after a general anaesthetic should not be spent alone.
- Your own compression garments if you already have well-fitting ones, plus the ones the hospital supplies.
- A written list of every medication and supplement you take, including anything for blood pressure, diabetes or blood thinning.
- Travel insurance, plus a clear read of what it excludes. Planned cosmetic surgery is excluded from almost every standard travel policy, and complications from it usually are too. Some Thai hospitals sell a separate complication cover for international patients, which is worth pricing.
- A flexible return flight and one hotel booking you can extend.
- Copies of your consent form, treatment plan and quotation, saved somewhere that is not only your phone.
What You Can Actually Do While You Heal
Nobody flies to Thailand to look at a hotel ceiling for three weeks, and nobody should plan an island-hopping itinerary for the week after surgery either. The honest version is that week one is written off, and week two gives you back the evenings. Here is what fits.
- No heat. Saunas, steam rooms, hot springs and midday sun all increase swelling. This rules out most daytime outdoor plans for the first ten days.
- No water. Pools, the sea and hot baths are out until every wound is fully closed and the surgeon says so, usually two to four weeks. Infection risk, not squeamishness.
- No exertion. Anything that raises your heart rate or blood pressure raises bleeding risk in the first fortnight. Gentle walking is encouraged, in fact required, because it is what keeps clots away.
- No sun on scars. For a year, not for a fortnight.
- Nothing that risks a knock. After facial surgery in particular. Crowds, motorbike taxis and small children moving fast are all worth avoiding.
What is left is better than it sounds: air-conditioned, seated, indoor, short, and mostly in the evening. Four things we sell fit that description precisely, and they are the ones we suggest to patients recovering in Bangkok.
The safest thing on this list and the first outing most people manage. It is indoors, air-conditioned, entirely flat, takes under an hour and sits inside a shopping mall on the BTS, so there is no walking in the heat at either end. Good from around day five for eyelid or facial work, and from day seven after body surgery. If you need one small thing to prove to yourself that the trip is not a write-off, make it this one.
A lift to the top and an indoor observation floor with the whole city underneath it. There is an open rooftop as well, which is worth skipping in the afternoon heat and worth ten minutes at sunset once your swelling has settled. Almost no walking, no crowds if you go on a weekday, and it is the one thing you can photograph and send home without explaining anything.
Two and a half hours sitting down at a table, on the water, after dark, with the temples lit up as you pass them. No heat, no sun, no walking, no standing. It sails from Asiatique, so if you are up to it you can arrive early and drift through the night market first, and if you are not, you go straight to the gangway and sit.
We suggest this one for the last few nights, once the stitches are out and you feel like a person again. It is the evening that makes the trip feel like a trip rather than a procedure, and it is the one thing on this page that works just as well for whoever came with you.
